Do Solar Panels Work On Overcast Days?

Can solar panels collect solar energy on cloudy or even completely overcast days?

It’s easy to assume that a solar panel requires sunlight and/or its heat in order to function. In other words, if sunlight doesn’t hit the solar panels, they won’t work.

Actually, while solar panels flourish in bright sunlight, they also function well on days that are overcast or cold. Think about it for a minute.

You can still get a sunburn even when on a cloudy, overcast, cold day. The cloud cover merely interrupts the sunlight, it doesn’t prevent it. The result is filtered sunlight that is collected by solar panels. Granted the output will be reduced, but it is still productive!

The only time solar panels are not collecting sunlight is at night. And who knows, some “bright” mind out there may find a way around this hurdle!

So, to answer the question… solar panels can absolutely collect solar energy on overcast days!
